This year’s District Camp was held at the Dilston Scout Campsite, halfway between Hexham and Corbridge.

The camp was attended by young people and adults from a number of groups, who took part in a fun weekend of activities.

On the Saturday morning, half of the Cubs went on a 2˝ hour walk through the woods to the west of the site, where they were fascinated by the giant nests of wood ants, and spotted different coloured flowers and plants. The remaining Cubs on site took part in miniature raft building, backwoods cooking, and bottle rockets.

On the afternoon the Cubs swapped around for the other half to do the walk. The afternoon walk group ran into a reconstruction group dressed as some sort of dark-age warriors practicing in a clearing in the woods, which was a surprise for the Cubs.

The Scouts spent the Saturday on a series of bases covering raft building, archery, obstacle course, ballista building, backwoods cooking and orienteering.

The day was rounded off with a campfire – thank you to those who stood in at short notice to run it.

Sunday morning’s activities were greatly curtailed by the rain. The Cubs race with the miniature rafts they had built on the Saturday managed to take place – at least there was shelter from the trees along the river bank. A team of Leaders got all the craft onto the river and everyone watched from the riverbank to see which craft was first to make it under the bridge. Downstream of the bridge the lollypop stick, cork, and pop bottle craft were recovered onto the riverbank.

With the non-stop rain, many groups wanted to get away as quickly as possible, so many parents were contacted to get there sooner than planned, and those on buses were trying to get them there a little earlier. Most people managed to be away by around 3pm.

Thanks to all those who attended and enjoyed a fun weekend, and thanks to all those who helped with running the weekend and looking after the young people.
